Roberto Di Matteo declared Chelsea were good enough to win the Champions League as he stood on the brink of leading them to arguably the greatest victory in their history.

Barely seven weeks since taking charge and less than seven days after masterminding an astonishing semi-final first-leg win over Barcelona, caretaker Blues boss Di Matteo arrived at the Nou Camp determined to complete the job.

Chelsea have been written off this season and even before that, something that prompted Di Matteo to hit out at their critics after Saturday’s Barclays Premier League game at Arsenal.

And he was adamant they have what it takes to end their agonising nine-year wait for Champions League glory since Roman Abramovich bought the club.

Manchester United entertain Wayne Rooney’s former club Everton on Sunday knowing victory will put them one win away from retaining the title, no matter how Manchester City fare in their encounter with Wolves at Molineux later in the day.

Everton boss David Moyes still feels any kind of a top-10 finish this term would represent a “great” outcome for his side.

The Toffees have finished between eighth and fifth in each of the last five seasons and look set for something similar this time round having made their customary surge in the latter half of the campaign.

Moyes’ men have lost only twice in 13 league games and with five remaining and are a point clear of local rivals Liverpool, who came from behind to beat them 2-1 in last weekend’s FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.

Bayern hold the upper hand with ten wins to Madrid’s six from the clubs’s 18 past matches. The Bavarian side’s home record against Madrid is W8 D1 L0.

The clubs have met in four previous European Cup semi-finals with Bayern prevailing three times (1976, 1987, 2001) to Madrid’s one (2000). Iker Casillas is the only survivor of the two most recent semi-finals.

Both teams have won four of their eight previous two-legged encounters in the competition. The most recent came in the 2006/07 round of 16 when Bayern prevailed on away goals, losing 3-2 in Spain but winning 2-1 in Munich.

Madrid are unbeaten in this season’s competition but Bayern have posted six straight home wins and overall have won 13 of their last 14 European home outings. The only blip came in the 2010/11 round of 16 when Inter won 3-2 in Munich.

With four wins from five and just one goal conceded, Madrid’s away form is almost as impressive but their record on German soil augurs less well. The Merengues’ 22 previous visits have brought 15 losses and just one victory – 3-2 against Bayer 04 Leverkusen in 2000/01.

Full-back Kieran Gibbs has a 50-50 chance of returning from a groin against Wigan. Midfielder Gervinho (ankle) is also likely to be back while midfielders Abou Diaby and Francis Coquelin (both hamstring) are set to return to the squad next week for full training. Per Mertesacker is continuing his rehabilitation in Germany after suffering an ankle injury against Sunderland in February and fellow defender Laurent Koscielny is suspended.

Boss Arsene Wenger believes Yossi Benayoun is ready to play a key part as they chase Champions League qualification in the vital last weeks of the season. The Israeli midfielder has made 16 league appearances for Arsenal and scored two goals in a season in which he has been hampered by injury. Wenger, however, has seen signs the creative playmaker, on a season-long loan from Chelsea, is back to his best.

Wenger said: “He has been very patient and very professional. ”He came here with lack of competition and it took him a while to become really sharp. ”He kept working and waited for his place. We kept faith in him and put him in for big games because he is an intelligent and talented player. He has a good team attitude. The problem with Yossi was more physical because he is a guy who plays on his sharpness and quick movement.

“He had a big injury don’t forget and it took him some time to come back. After that, when you do not play big games it takes you time to find the confidence again. Now he is there.”

Striker Hugo Rodallega is Wigan’s only injury concern. Rodallega has not played for the Latics since March 11 due to a knee problem but is back in training and will be assessed before the trip to north London. ”We need to assess him over the next two or three days to see how he responds, but he has been training with the group,” said manager Roberto Martinez. ”He is not at 100% yet and he is the only one where there is a question mark about whether or not he will be available for Monday. Tottenham striker Emmanuel Adebayor is determined to exact revenge on Chelsea for ruining his only Wembley appearance three years ago.

Adebayor will lead the line for Spurs at Wembley on Sunday as the north London club look to move one step closer to lifting their first FA Cup in 21 years by beating Chelsea in their semi-final.

Having spent five years on the books of Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham it is surprising that Adebayor has not yet won a single competition in England – the only piece of silverware he has to his name is a winner’s medal from the 2011 Copa del Rey triumph with Real Madrid.

For a striker who has been a part of the fibre of English football for so long, it is also surprising that Adebayor has only made one appearance at Wembley so far in his career – Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat in the 2009 FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea.

The loss, which came in Adebayor’s final season at Arsenal, still rankles with the 28-year-old and he hopes to put that right.

“My only appearance at Wembley so far was that 2-1 loss so my memories are not good,” Adebayor said.

“But this is a new game and we want to win. Football is all about winning medals and they are the moments in life that you can look back on with pride.

“I want to win the FA Cup so I can show my medal to my kids and say `look what daddy won!’

“I didn’t win anything with Arsenal, I didn’t win anything with Manchester City, so I want to win the FA Cup with Tottenham. To do that would be special, a dream for me.

“Tottenham haven’t won a trophy since 2008 and so it would be great to win silverware again.

“We are two wins away from achieving that.”

Having seen Chelsea win 11 trophies since 1991 compared to Tottenham’s two, Harry Redknapp is determined that his men can step up and lose their ‘nearly-men’ tag this season.

Their form going in to tomorrow’s clash could hardly be worse, however. Spurs have won just one of their last eight Barclays Premier League games and Redknapp also has an injury crisis to contend with having lost Younes Kaboul and Niko Kranjcar this week.

But Tottenham just edged a 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge last month and lead the Blues in the table by two points, making Adebayor confident of victory.

“It will be a tough game against Chelsea,” he said.

“We know them well as a team but I believe we can beat them. They are not vulnerable, but certainly beatable and if we believe in ourselves, we can win.”

Ledley King is a doubt with his chronic knee problem, leaving Ryan Nelsen and William Gallas as the only fit senior centre-halves. Midfielder Scott Parker is a doubt with a hamstring injury.

Roberto Di Matteo is more interested in his Chelsea players making their own history than maintaining his remarkable record at Wembley and against Tottenham.

Caretaker manager Di Matteo will send his side out on Sunday knowing he won every time he visited the national stadium as a player and scored in each of his cup finals there.

The 41-year-old has also never been on the losing side against Spurs either as a player or coach, something he is at a loss to explain.

“I don’t know why,” he said.

“But, at the end of the day, you need to get on the pitch and write the history of that game.

“It’s a new chapter. You look at the stats and it’s nice, but that’s in the past.

“We have to look to the present and the future and try to change that.”

He added: “It’s not about me. It’s about this group of players, Chelsea Football Club.

“This group of boys have won the FA Cup many times themselves.

“They like playing at Wembley, and have done so many times with their club and the national team. It’s a special place to play.”

No club has enjoyed more success at the new Wembley than Chelsea, whose only loss there came in the 2008 Carling Cup final.

They have won all five of their FA Cup games there and Di Matteo admitted the trophy meant a lot to the club.

“Yes, it does, and we have a good history in it,” he said.

“It’s a domestic trophy, and a tradition-rich trophy, well-known all over the world, the FA Cup.

“It’s prestigious to be able to win it.”
